[ARCHIVED] Project Spotlight: Croaker Road Widening Project

By Matthew Harrington, Transportation Planner

HRTPO staff regularly highlight a project currently being implemented in the Hampton Roads Region. James City County is currently working on their Croaker Road Widening project. The project builds on other recently completed improvements in the Norge section of James City County and is designed to accommodate anticipated future growth along the corridor, increase capacity, and enhance connectivity in a growing area.

The project will widen the existing two-lane Croaker Road to four lanes between Richmond Road and the Point O Woods Road/Maxton Lane intersection with a raised median. The project encompasses other features, such as improvements to the turn lanes at The Station at Norge Apartment complex, a dedicated thru-lane for southbound traffic at the Richmond Road intersection, and an exclusive right turn lane for southbound traffic at the Rose Lane intersection. There will also be a new southbound bridge crossing over the CSX Railroad tracks, which will accommodate the additional two lanes and a shared use path.

The new shared use path will be added on the west side of Croaker Road, from Richmond Road to just south of Rose Lane along with a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signal so pedestrians and bicyclists can cross safely to the James City County Library located on the east side of Croaker Road.

The total cost of the project is $ 19.2 million. Construction is underway currently and is estimated to be completed in the Fall of 2027.
