The 2024 Great American Cleanup, hosted by askHRgreen.org, was held on March 22-23, 2024 with events taking place across many localities in Hampton Roads. Inclement weather pushed back some events into April, but the volunteers still came out in full force! Volunteer groups included individuals and families as well as non-profits and corporate groups such as Amazon, Target, youth groups, military groups, and more. This month’s map depicts the results of the work of a record-breaking 3,000 volunteers across the region.
The volunteers cleared litter from parks, stream beds, roadsides, parking lots, and other areas where wayward trash tends to collect. There were also a few beautification projects, including tree plantings. The total trash collected between all the locations was over 126,000 pounds or 63 tons! There were also 442 tires collected.
On the map, the circles indicate where the individual cleanup events took place. The size of the circle represents the number of volunteers per event. The localities are symbolized by the total weight of litter collected. Click on the map to open the information pane for an event or locality and to see select photos from the events.
